TL;DR
Local rank tracking measures search position as a searcher in a specific city or neighborhood would see it — not as a national, logged-out search sees it. Google biases local-intent results by the searcher's location, so a single "check my ranking" search from one place can't tell you how you rank across a service area. This is a genuinely different measurement than standard keyword rank tracking, and most all-in-one SEO platforms — nqzai included — don't do it today. Here's what it measures, why it needs dedicated tooling, and how to approximate it by hand in the meantime.
What "local rank tracking" means
Google personalizes results by location for any query it judges to have local intent — not just "plumber near me," but things like "best pizza," "dentist," or even a brand name search in some cases. Two people searching the identical phrase from different addresses, at the same time, can see genuinely different rankings, different map-pack results, and even different businesses altogether.
A standard rank tracker checks position from one location (or a small handful of data-center IPs) and reports a single number. For a business with one location and no local-intent competition, that's close enough. For a business competing in a local pack, or a multi-location or service-area business, a single check from one place tells you almost nothing about how you rank for a searcher on the other side of town — that's the specific gap local rank tracking exists to close.
Why a normal rank check can't answer this
Most keyword and SEO platforms — nqzai's own keyword tracking included — resolve volume, difficulty, and position at the national level. That's the right grain for most content and product-marketing keywords, where the searcher's exact street doesn't change the result. It's the wrong grain for local-pack and near-me queries, where position can shift meaningfully within a few miles.
Nothing about a national rank check is wrong or broken for this — it's answering a different question than the one a multi-location or service-area business actually has.
How to approximate it without a dedicated tool
- Google Business Profile Insights — shows how customers found your listing (direct vs. discovery search) and includes some geographic breakdown of profile views. Coarse, but free and already connected if you manage a GBP listing.
- Search Console's Country filter — narrows impressions/position to a country, not a city. Useful for confirming you're even showing up in the right country, not a substitute for city-level tracking.
- Manual spot-checks from the target area — an incognito search with Chrome DevTools' sensor location override set to the target coordinates, or a search from a device physically in that area, shows the actual local result set for that point. Slow to do at scale, but it's a real, honest reading for a handful of priority locations.
- Dedicated local rank trackers — tools built specifically for this (BrightLocal, Whitespark, and Local Falcon are the well-known names in this category) simulate searches from a grid of points around a location and plot rank as a heatmap. If per-city or per-neighborhood tracking at scale is the actual requirement, a purpose-built tool is the right answer, not a workaround.
What nqzai does and doesn't do here
To be direct about it: nqzai does not have a dedicated local (per-city or per-neighborhood) rank tracker today. Keyword position tracking resolves at the national level, the same grain as its keyword volume and difficulty data.
What nqzai does have, and what's actually relevant to local search: a NAP consistency checker — Name/Address/Phone consistency across the web is a real local-SEO ranking signal, and a different one than rank position itself. If the need is "am I cited consistently everywhere," that's covered. If the need is "where do I show up in the map pack from three different neighborhoods," that's the gap above, and a dedicated local rank tracker is the honest recommendation.
Frequently asked questions
Is local rank tracking the same as tracking my Google Business Profile ranking? Related but not identical. GBP/map-pack ranking is one visible surface local rank tracking measures; the same location-bias affects standard organic (blue-link) results too, which a map-pack-only view wouldn't catch.
Does a VPN set to the target city give an accurate reading? Closer than a plain search, but IP-based geolocation is a proxy for GPS-precise location — Google's local ranking signals can be more granular than what an IP-based location spoof reflects. It's a reasonable manual approximation, not a lab-grade measurement.
Why doesn't every SEO platform just add this? It requires simulating searches from many distinct geographic points per keyword, which is a meaningfully different (and more expensive) data-collection problem than a single national rank check multiplied by keyword count — it's why this stayed a specialized tool category rather than a checkbox feature on general-purpose platforms.
